PHG 301 Introduction to Genetic Epidemiology

T Th 1:30-2:50, SIG 225

What makes some people succumb to a disease, while others remain

healthy?

Epidemiology seeks to pin down the crucial differences, and

genetic epidemiology specifically examines role of the genetic

instructions encoding each of us. Understanding to what degree genes do

and don’t shape our destiny is crucial to navigating the increasingly

available genetic testing, as Angelina Jolie did recently when she

underwent a prophylactic double mastectomy in response to her BRCA1 gene

status.

PHG 301 will introduce students to the scientific approaches

used in teasing out the roles that genes and environment play in shaping

public health.
