Pol S 120, Perspectives On Contemporary Public Policy Issues

Open to students in all disciplines!

This course will be an opportunity for students to learn about and discuss a range of important public policy issues and controversies in contemporary public life. Once a week, a different member of the Political Science faculty will present a topic that reflects their scholarly passion.

Presenters include:

Prof. Matthew Barreto, Immigration Policy in America

Prof. Jamie Mayerfeld, Guantanamo: Preventive Detention in Theory and Practice

Prof. Rebecca Thorpe, The Politics of Crime and Punishment in America

Requirements: Students read about the topic in advance of each lecture and take a short quiz. Following each lecture, there is a question and answer session with the presenter. Over the course of the quarter, students also choose three of the presented topics and write a five-page essay on each.
